One of the priorities of the Igbo political elite is to secure the 2023 Igbo presidency. It is the right thing to do and for equity sake, it is a just and fair thing to do. In the light of what the Igbo man stands for, diplomacy is employed to get other zones of the country to see the just reason to get an Igbo president instead of creating havoc. According to reports, other zones have begun to see the reason to be just and fair to Igbo people. That is why leaders from other zones voice support for Igbo presidency.
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe played a key role to secure Nigeria’s independence from the British control, but he settled for the post of president which was largely ceremonial while Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became the Prime Minister with administrative powers. This followed by the six-month military rule of Major General Aguiyi Ironsi in 1966. Since then till the present day, Igbo people have not had a shot as president of Nigeria.
Presidential powers like we have witnessed, have many benefits as well as limited benefits depending on the person in power. Some people argue that it often has nothing much to benefit the people of the ethnic group or the region of the president. President Goodluck Jonathan had five years for the South-South zone but upon the end of his presidency, some roads in the region were still bad. The same is seen in Northern Nigeria where president Buhari comes from. The north has been experiencing various forms of kidnapping and banditry. But the presidential powers can also attract some infrastructural amenities to the zone which has cried out for marginalization for a very long time. President Buhari is from Katsina and Fulani ethnic group whose people extend to Niger republic; a standard gauge railway is being built to Maradi in Niger republic with borrowed money to be refunded by Nigeria. Since his inauguration, there have been attempts to secure the interests of the Fulani. The presidential powers could stop so many written and unwritten policies that have made Igbo people a relegated society politically.
Igbo people have contributed immensely to the development of the country both within and outside the country. It is only fair and just to have the people touted for their prowess in raising a business from the scratch with little to no state backing to know how to transform the country. After all, they emerged as millionaires and billionaires from the 20 pounds given to them after the Biafran war no matter how much were in the bank prior to the war. A people who transform a rural community to urban community within a short period of time can know how to transform the country. A people who know the value of money and work hard to earn it will know how to make the country to thrive.
The Igbo man or woman should be given a chance, to transform this country, and enthrone the principle of justice, equity, freedom and progress.
