Be ruthless with ballot box snatchers, Buhari orders military and police

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday ordered the Police and the military to be “ruthless” with ballot box snatchers.

He spoke at the All Progressives Congress national caucus meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

He said, “I really gave the military and police order to be ruthless… Anybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body of thugs to snatch ballot boxes or disturbs the voting system, will do so at the expense of his own life.”

The president’s directive is outside the electoral law.

Section 129 (4) of the Electoral Act states, “Any person who snatches or destroys any election material commits an offence and is liable on conviction to 24 months imprisonment.”
